Price Elasticity of Demand for State Research Universities (in
early stages of research)
There has been considerable study
of the price sensitive of student demand for community college
and four year institutions without selective admissions. Individual
private institutions have detailed (but specific and proprietary)
knowledge of their own prospective students price sensitivity
which is much less than that of students at the margin of higher
education. Almost nothing is known of the price sensitivity of
students at state supported research universities since the sticker
price is very much lower than either the cost, or the market price
for the service. This study will seek to define some parameters
of what students might be willing to pay for the type of education
provided by state research intuitions (which have virtually no
private analog in terms of selectivity, class size, and level
of student service provided).
